Atheism in Simple Language

I’ve been reading books by Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitches, Sam Roberts and the latest is Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon
by Daniel Dennett.

Unfortunately these books are often high-brow, using complex language and concepts. I’m no slouch, with a Master’s degree in Engineering, and have read books all my life consistently. I guess when you get biologists to be the spokesmen for atheism you are asking for trouble. If you’ve seen Dawkins on comedy shows and Fox news you will see how uncomfortable he is with humor and loud mouthed people.

I’m proposing that we need simple, clear ideas to make progress these days. Arguing about evolution is probably not going to do it.

Can We Have Morality without God?

A common argument by believers is that without god, we would ‘act like animals’. While I find that comparison to be offensive to animals, it is simply not true. The field of evolutionary ethics is expanding. Here’s a good blog post on morals without god in recent response to an interview between Bill O’Reilly and Richard Dawkins (not to mention Bill gets off the topic of evolution itself).

Hooray for Intolerance!

The Government of Alberta, Canada recent passed Bill 44 in June 2009, which allows parents to pull their kids out of school if teachers talk about sex, sexual orientation, or religion.

It seems to me that we should be teaching our kids how to have a rational debate with others, without closing our minds to other ideas. Cutting ourselves off from other ideas can’t be good for society. What do you think?
